Automatic Capital Gains Tax Calculator: Interested?

I am planning to write a utility that will extract data from my online trading account and automatically calculate my year's capital gains tax and split into lots, short term/long term etc.

Would any of you be interested in such a utility? If so, please let me know - I am planning to write it to download data from Sharekhan, since I have an account there, but if you need one of a different account, say ICICI Direct or such, please let me know.

I may charge fees for the utility but to the first set of people who answer (and help me beta test!) I will provide it for free.

I usually download the data from ICICI Direct onto excel and do the calculations using excel.

>Wow, cool response. I have figured out how things work at Sharekhan, though I have no access to ICICIDirect’s data. I personally have a complex excel sheet I use for tax calculation. If ICICIDirect provides data that is exportable to excel that’s a big boon!

If someone can help me with some dummy ICICI data (say provide me with a web page or HTML file with the following: Scrip, buy or sell, price, brokerage, other charges, STT (needed for capital gains) and totals. I can then figure out how to parse and use it properly…

I will be back soon with more info.

>I am interested. I have an account with ICICIDIRECT and Motilal Oswal

>I have already developed a utility to process ICICI direct data and i am using to calculate my own share profit and tax. This utility is built using oracle pl/sql, you just need to copy the trade book data and paste into a text file and provide the input to the utility. It could have been developed in excel too, but developing in pl/sql helped me to easily validate intermediate steps in processing and generate reports on profit/tax by financial year etc. It specifically helped me because i had more than 500 transactions in the last year and for every (x) shares sold, i had to find the exact set of shares bought on what date and at what price. For example, if I bought 50 shares @2000 on 10-JAN-2006, 300 shares bought @2500 on 15-JUN-2006 and sold 200 @3000 on 20-AUG-2006, I have to process this as 50 sold @3000 against 50 bought @2000 and 150 sold @3000 against 150 bought @2500.I haven’t yet developed a web interface to use this online, but i can help if anybody provides text file to me.
