Podcast: Why the crypto crash impacts you?
Cryptocurrencies were all the rage in the past few years on account of rising asset prices and volatility. Now, they are going through a bear market that has witnessed some popular currencies going totally bust. This phenomenon of an "asset class" going from hot to untouchable is not new. We've seen this again and again in different forms and proportions. The current bear market in cryptos certainly impacts the investors, start-ups, promoters, and VCs who are directly involved in the crypto business. But, this bear market has second-order effects that may impact you as well. Listen in, as Deepak and Shray discuss the nuances of how the crypto bear market impacts you.

Why SEBI doesn’t want you getting advice from unregulated algos (EP43)
With technology comes great responsibility, says SEBI, as it attempts to regulate the algorithmic trading markets that have just started to evolve in India. The concept of “API” trading, through Application Programming Interfaces, is the standard in the web and app-based world, but SEBI doesn’t want you to manage your own money programmatically. Or, worse, to give it to someone else who is “unregulated” to manage your money through an algorithm either.

The Best Nifty Index Fund in 2021
The largest mutual fund in India is the SBI Nifty Index Fund (ETF). This fund has 119,000 cr. in AUM. The next largest fund is the SBI Sensex fund (ETF) with 60,000 cr. These are "index funds", where the fund manager simply follows an index, versus an "active" fund where a fund manager thinks deeply and decides which stocks to buy. So what are index funds? What if we said that when it comes to evaluating index funds, expense ratios do not matter? Real Expense Ratios matter, and you won't find that on the fund factsheet, and definitely not in the marketing presentation. In this post, we get into the details of how to evaluate and pick the best index fund. Also, which is the best NIFTY Index fund and best NIFTY ETF in 2021.

Capitalmind Premium League - 2021 Results and 2022 launch
We started Capitalmind Premium League last year - a fantasy stock-picking exercise for Capitalmind Premium subscribers. The idea was to put ourselves in the shoes of the fund manager and take bets on stocks to beat the market in the coming year. But then, stock picking, in one sense, is a behavioural exercise; it's not about picking what you like. It is more about sizing what others may like. In his beauty contest analogy, Keynes likened it with how participants would behave in a contest to choose the most beautiful faces from several hundred photographs. The winners would be the ones chosen to be the most popular, and therefore contestants would be better off guessing the tastes of the majority. Then there is also this forward-looking aspect to the markets. You need to guess what the majority would prefer in the future. While we wanted to have as much fun doing this exercise, the market has different plans in store. The year-long rally meant most portfolios did well. Here is a round-up of the 2021 edition and announcement of the next one!

Wealth Letter July 2021: Following the Disruption
[This is an excerpt from the July 2021 letter to Capitalmind PMS Clients] India has a strange set of rules for movies. When someone is smoking on the screen, the movie must show a line that says smoking is injurious to health. This is resented by the moviemakers, who understand that smoking is bad, but they want to have the viewer’s full focus, and not distract them regularly. Tobacco companies obviously don’t like the legislation, and viewers don’t necessarily care, though there is a slow subliminal message being created of cigarettes being bad things. Read on for the July 2021 letter to PMS clients.

Wealth Letter April 2021: Sleeping and Staying Awake
I was going through some really old papers, all the way back to 1977, in an effort to finally clear out a box of papers that we had kept since my father passed away more than 20 years ago. It took me a few hours, and through all the emotions, I read through how my Dad had invested and saved his money. And when I look back....the story has some startling revelations. Podcast EP37: The hidden risks to the financial system
Are the recent problems - GME, Greensill and Archegos - signs of a damaged financial system that is so terribly fragile that a slightly bigger disaster can easily crush us? Like what Covid has done to the world's health system, are there more hidden risks in our financial system that can trigger a repeat of 2008? In this episode, Deepak and Shray explore what's happened in the US over the past few months, and examples of hidden leverage within India - Karvy, Zee, DHFL and Harshad Mehta.

Grounded In 2021: Airlines need more run-way
It is a double whammy for Indian airlines. Not only crude prices have seen a sharp jump, but also air traffic has started to fall. Are the airlines being able to offset this impact by increasing ticket prices? What will be the impact of this on IndiGo? Will IndiGo's valuations work as a safety net or are they priced-to-perfection?

Wealth Letter March 2021: The Month of Crazy
The Indian budget revealed one big thing: the government is going to borrow a lot more money. From a 7 lakh crore of planned borrowing last year, we’ll see over 12 lakh crores borrowed in the coming year. Add to that the woe of inflation, and interest rates in the bond market - better known as “yields” - have risen sharply. The government used to borrow at 5.8% and now it’s borrowing at 6.2% or more. This has also seen echoes elsewhere in the world. When Joe Biden was sworn in, in January, yields in the US were less than 1%. Now they have moved to 1.5%. Everywhere, people are paying a little more to borrow. How does this impact stocks? Read on for edited excerpts from Deepak's March memo to Capitalmind PMS clients.

Chase Monthly Fact Sheet: Jan 2021
January 2021 turned out to be an interesting month, where we had a long trade which continued from last week of December'20 to mid of Jan'21. For Chase long trades matter more than short ones. A week of choppiness, which we expected after a longish trade and then market started cracking. The fall in the markets was largely hedged by the active futures component.
