In this episode, Deepak & Shray break from the trend and do something different. Rather than zooming out, we zoom in. We discuss two companies that are going through fascinating developments and make for an interesting discussion. LIC is a recently listed insurer that has a gigantic balance sheet and is a household name in our country of 1.4 billion. It operates in a market that is expanding wider as well as penetrating deeper. Yet, the company seems to be valued poorly by the markets. What’s happening here? HDFC and HDFC Bank announced that they will merge at the start of this financial year. The merger is progressing rapidly, getting through from one regulatory approval to another, without much drama. But, this merger is causing drama at unrelated places that have nothing to do with the business or the merger (well, not directly at least). Will this merger make index funds do crazy rebalances? Listen In.

The IPO rush: Lessons from the past
What's common between the years 2007, 2010, 2017 and 2021? All of them Bull Market years. And far from coincidentally, all of them saw a spate of IPOs as companies rushed to cash in on record-high stock prices. The boom, fuelled by a tsunami of cash unleashed by central banks and the rise of individual investors, eager to buy a piece of their favourite companies. Big bang listings and record oversubscriptions have been the talk of the town lately. Nearly all the 36 IPOs so far in 2021, have witnessed record oversubscription and listing gains. But did you know that 1 in 4 companies that went public in the 2010 boom does not exist anymore? And that more than a decade later, 1 in 2 of those companies is trading below issue price? 2021 is already slated to become the biggest year for primary markets in terms of fundraising. We looked at data on stock performance of companies that went public in past bull markets, to see if there are any lessons for investors subscribing to 2021 IPOs.

Go Airlines: IPO for survival?
"Desperate Times Call for Desperate Measures" The struggling Go Airlines – has just filed for an IPO. Devastated by the ongoing pandemic, the airline sector has struggled with rising costs. To stay afloat, promoters of India’s fourth-largest airline have chosen to tap the primary market. Should you look forward to invest? Short Answer: Promoters prefer to offer a slice of ownership in their enterprises when equity market conditions are favourable and they are able to set the price on the back of strong recent operational performance. Go Air doesn't have that luxury as it needs to raise money to reduce debt. Compared to its peers, Go Air has struggled, both to maintain market share, and to run operations profitably. Frequent leadership and auditor changes, disputes with promoters over brand rights haven't helped. While we await the IPO price bands to be announced, this is not a public issue to hold your breath for. Read on for our detailed take.

MTAR Tech IPO: Should you invest?
The 8th IPO of 2021, MTAR Technologies is a speciality engineering firm, is raising almost 600 Crores as a combination of fresh issue and Offer For Sale. The Indian government has demonstrated its focus on indigenization of defence technologies. It announced an import ban on 101 defence-based items and has mandated the use of 50% of indigenous content in defence goods. It has also sanctioned the manufacture of 10 fleet reactors with a combined generation capacity of 7,000 MW. With the improving acceptance of clean energy, the outlook of MTAR's focus sector seems to be bright. Its sole customer Bloom Energy is planning to expand its operations in the South Korean market. Indigo Paints IPO: Should You Invest?
India’s fifth-largest paint company – Indigo Paints Ltd. – is looking to list on the Indian bourses as it opens its initial public offering on January 20. This will be among the first few IPOs of 2021. In the previous year 2020, as many as 15 companies made stock market debuts. Exiting investors will make a killing in this initial public offering. Sequoia Capital through its two funds will make gains in the range of 13 to 20 times its investment amount. Does it make sense for retail investors to buy? Short Answer: At such aggressive valuations, a lot of things need to fall in place, especially whem competing against one of the most efficient companies in India - Asian Paints. While the near-term high growth rate can be sustained, we remain skeptical of Indigo sustaining a similar growth rate in the long run. We would pass on this IPO.

CAMS IPO: Should you invest?
Computer Age Management Services Limited (CAMS) has filed DRHP with the SEBI for its upcoming IPO. We take a look to see if one should subscribe. Penetration of mutual funds in India is 11% as compared to the world average of 55%. Majority of financial savings are in physical assets. Increase in penetration rates of mutual funds and a shift in savings from physical assets to financial assets provides a huge runway for companies like CAMS. CAMS has 70% market share in a two player market, favourable return ratios and not much need for capital investments. Albeit expensive at the IPO offer price, the growth runway and current duopoly make this an attractive issue to subscribe.
