The WWII Bomber Puzzle: A powerful lesson for modern investors
Our recent article in The Economic Times reveals how survivorship bias can mislead investors. Drawing on the story of World War II bombers and statistician Abraham Wald's brilliant insights, we explore the dangers of focusing only on successful funds, companies, or strategies. Just as military commanders nearly reinforced the wrong areas of bombers, investors often chase 'proven' track records while ignoring the unseen failures. Our article provides actionable insights to help investors uncover true risks and build resilient portfolios. From managing liquidity risk to diversifying across asset classes, we invite readers to examine their own blind spots and take steps to protect against hidden vulnerabilities.

Jubilant Foodworks: A turnaround sequel on the cards?
2017: The CEO had resigned. The stock had fallen 50%. Investors were worried about growth prospects. Historically, the promoters had relied on professional managers to run the company. At this critical juncture, Jubilant Foods found the man who would pull it out of the rut. A top-tier MBA, an ex-HUL executive with solid business acumen - Pratik Pota. Cut to 2022, and a new man for the job is now - Sameer Khetarpal. And Jubilant Foodworks now faces the same challenges it did years back. Pratik Pota has resigned. The stock is down 50%. The company brought in Sameer Khetarpal, ISB alumni and an ex-HUL guy, as the new MD & CEO. Too many similarities. Yet, the investors of Jubilant Foodworks will hope he would do a repeat of the revival act. When Pratik Pota joined in 2017, Jubilant Food stock, backed by a business turnaround, went up 7x. Will it deliver this time as well? How different was the company then & now? What should investors expect in the next five years? We try to answer some of these questions in this post.

On Market Timing: What if you were the luckiest investor in India?
Covid, lockdowns, forced working from home were the guests who would never leave. After two years, we had just about managed to manoeuvre them toward the door. And just as you cracked the door open with the pleasurable anticipation of their exit, this other group of distant and not very likeable relatives in the form of Russia-Ukraine, barges in, arguing loudly among themselves. The markets have more than doubled from the low of March 2020, up almost 130% as of writing this. They're also up 40% from pre-March2020-crash levels, so even the Feb 2020 investor has done pretty well. But no one wants to be that guy. The guy who invested just before a big fall. And so, once more the most frequent question is: Is this a good time to invest? In other words, how do I NOT be the shmuck who bought at the top?
