Podcast: How arbitrage funds might have systemic risk on a tax-rule change
"If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck", goes the saying. Arbitrage mutual funds are actually taxed as equity funds but they actually behave as debt funds. And this tax arbitrage of arbitrage funds is what the regulators may be looking to fix. In light of this, we have our latest episode of the Capitalmind Podcast, where we dive into the intriguing world of arbitrage mutual funds, also known as arb funds.

Podcast: Turbulent times - RBI thrives, Fed fumbles
. Markets are slaves of earnings and liquidity. Liquidity has taken prominence after the coronavirus outbreak. At first, central banks across the world increased liquidity by cutting rates and helping their populace to live through the pandemic. Then the after effects of increasing liquidity hit - increased inflation. Now, the same banks are sucking out liquidity by increasing interest rates to counter inflation. The looming after effect of increasing rates is the "r" word that is too pious to speak loudly. In this podcast, Deepak & Shray discuss the two central banks that impact us the most - RBI and FED (Federal Reserve System, USA). What makes this podcast interesting is that we are looking at everything from the lens of who does better - FED or RBI? .

Podcast: Is it a good time to invest in gold?
🎙New Podcast In this episode, Deepak and Shray unravel different aspects related to investing in gold. Gold has been around as a store of value for a couple of millennia, probably longer, because of how little there is and how difficult it is to get out of the earth. Now get this - all the Gold mined would fit in a crate with sides of 21 meters. That’s roughly the length of three and a half standard containers. Yet, in the last decade, this scarce and loved asset class has done just enough to match inflation. This means, adjusted for inflation, gold has returned nothing! Now, after putting returns of gold into perspective, we get on to the theme of our podcast - Does it make sense to invest in Gold? We look at gold from different lenses while we determine: - If gold is a hedge against inflation? - Can gold protect you in a crisis like war? - Is gold investment to create long-term wealth? - What's an efficient way to invest in gold?

Wealth Letter July 2021: Following the Disruption
[This is an excerpt from the July 2021 letter to Capitalmind PMS Clients] India has a strange set of rules for movies. When someone is smoking on the screen, the movie must show a line that says smoking is injurious to health. This is resented by the moviemakers, who understand that smoking is bad, but they want to have the viewer’s full focus, and not distract them regularly. Tobacco companies obviously don’t like the legislation, and viewers don’t necessarily care, though there is a slow subliminal message being created of cigarettes being bad things. Read on for the July 2021 letter to PMS clients.

Wealth Letter April 2021: Sleeping and Staying Awake
I was going through some really old papers, all the way back to 1977, in an effort to finally clear out a box of papers that we had kept since my father passed away more than 20 years ago. It took me a few hours, and through all the emotions, I read through how my Dad had invested and saved his money. And when I look back....the story has some startling revelations. Wealth Letter March 2021: The Month of Crazy
The Indian budget revealed one big thing: the government is going to borrow a lot more money. From a 7 lakh crore of planned borrowing last year, we’ll see over 12 lakh crores borrowed in the coming year. Add to that the woe of inflation, and interest rates in the bond market - better known as “yields” - have risen sharply. The government used to borrow at 5.8% and now it’s borrowing at 6.2% or more. This has also seen echoes elsewhere in the world. When Joe Biden was sworn in, in January, yields in the US were less than 1%. Now they have moved to 1.5%. Everywhere, people are paying a little more to borrow. How does this impact stocks? Read on for edited excerpts from Deepak's March memo to Capitalmind PMS clients.
